Extra Credit Assignment -- DNS

Due:  Friday, April 24, 2009

Assignment: Write a report (500 words minimum -- about 2 pages) explaining how the worldwide DNS system works.  How many root servers are there?  Who manages them?  How do they update and how often?  Explain how updates are propagated.  Are these servers redundant to each other?  Where are they located?  You do not need to answer every question, but the report will be graded on the overall completeness with which you address this subject.

Please include proper citations for your sources.  The citations should not be counted as part of the 2 page/500 word minimum.  Please use the textbook as a guide, but not a source of your research.

This assignment will count as double extra credit.  If you have not submitted any extra credit assignments for lessons 12 and 13, this assignment will count in both lessons.  If you have already submitted one assignment for these lessons, this assignment will count as a single extra credit assignment.
